.....because the restaurant lobby fought the Oregon State Legislature hard to ban Sports Action based on the "economic impact" hosting first-and-second round NCAA tournaments!



Rubbish!



Academic reports have been written to prove and debunk this myth of a NCAA basketball tournament being an economic savior, as well as proving that economic impact estimates are commonly over-inflated by around 75% (see Indianapolis Final Four example, page 6 of this report)!!!



Arthur Fleisher, a sports economist at Metropolitan State College of Denver (an Alma Mater of this blog), said the actual economic impact of sporting events often falls short of expectations anyway.


"Most economists find that the impacts of things like the NCAA tournament and the Super Bowl are overestimated," he said. "The people who put out these estimates have an incentive to kind of inflate the numbers."


"The actual economic impact can be less than one-tenth of the estimates."



Um-Hummm........



Sports Action = $12 million in sales annually for the State of Oregon



"Estimated" economic impact of Portland hosting the first-and-second round matches of the 2009 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament = $10 million



Actual estimate of economic impact of Portland hosting first-and-second round matches in the Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament in 2009 based upon what leading sports economists state = $1 to 3 million, mostly for the private sector....not all of this estimate is going to stay in Oregon, either.



Most importantly?? These tournaments MAY come to Oregon ONCE EVERY FOUR YEARS at most!!!



Sports Action??? It generates $12 million or so EVERY year....



Um-hummm.....do the math! Wonder if our state legislature did.....

Was looking at a few old You Tube videos. Saw this one ONCE back in 1985 or so, and then never again on MTV. Sad, really....one of the better videos of the time. The facial expressions and body language from the band members aren't anything you'd actually expect to see in a video.....wow....musicians who actually appear to have the ability to act???
